McClatchy Announces Eight Awards For Excellence in Specialty And Community Publishing – PR Newswire (press release)

“These awards reflect the excellent work McClatchy employees are doing all across the country – and not just in our largest newsrooms,” said Craig Forman, McClatchy’s president and CEO.  “We are proud to honor such a broad range of innovative projects.”

This year’s specialty and community news awards were judged by three McClatchy leaders: Tim Grieve, vice president for news; Mark Zieman, vice president for operations; and Kim Nussbaum; vice president for advertising.

The specialty and community news awards follow the announcement in March of President’s Awards for McClatchy’s daily publications.

Here is the full list of winners in the specialty publications and community news division:

Fort Mill Times
Testing water quality
Michael Harrison, Reporter

As questions about water quality arose across the country, the Fort Mill Times reached  out to readers via social media and invited them to have the water in their homes tested for lead and other elements. The judges said they were struck by the ambitious nature of the project – and by the successful attempt to engage deeply with local readers.

Puyallup Herald
Legacy of Krystal Skoda
Kevin Manning, Reporter

High school sports coverage can fade into a blur of scores and stats, but not in the hands of Kevin Manning. In a three-part series, Manning dug deep into the painful story of a family – and a team – that lost its matriarch. Manning’s wrenching work transcends sports and touched the hearts of the judges – and of the readers.

The News & Observer
Walter magazine
Liza Roberts, Editor/General Manager; Jesma Reynolds, Creative Director; Jessie Ammons, Assistant Editor; and Mimi Montgomery, Community Manager

For the second year in a row, Walter caught the eye of the President’s Award judges. A monthly city magazine for Raleigh, North Carolina, Walter offers all the beauty and sophistication of the finest national lifestyle magazines – and it is, unsurprisingly, incredibly popular with readers and advertisers in the Research Triangle.

The Kansas City Star
Spaces magazine
Zim Loy, Editorial Director; Alice Govert Bryan, Art Director; Judy Revenaugh, Photo Manager; and Aaron Leimkuehler, Senior Photographer

Spaces explores fine living in the Kansas City area. The judges noted that many such magazine are aspirational, but that Spaces works hard to make itself useful. Its second-annual “What the Pros Know” issue offered readers practical insider tips on everything from room design to kitchen tools.

Carlos Martin, Sr. Graphic Designer, HCP Media and Christine Borges, Sr. Editor, HCP Media

Created for the Mandarin Oriental in Miami, Senses uses cutting-edge design and stunning photography to highlight the opportunities for visitors at the luxury resort.

The college admissions process can be confusing and challenging for students and parents alike. The (San Luis Obispo) Tribune
BizBuzz EXTRA

The Chapel Hill News
Feature writing
Mark Schultz, Reporter

Over the course of a year, Schultz both entertained and pulled at the heartstrings of readers with beautifully written feature stories on everything from a hard-luck hog to a group that uses music to help people with autism and other developmental issues find their voice.
