Oscars fashion: Metallics, reds, black and white among top 2017 red carpet trends – ABC News
The glitz and glamour on the Oscars red carpet did not disappoint, with the silver screenâs biggest stars bringing their A-game to shine at the Academy Awards.
The âGood Morning Americaâ style experts, Bevy Smith, host of Sirius XMâs “Bevelations,â Lori Bergamotto, style director of âGood Housekeeping,â and Joe Zee, editor in chief of Yahoo Style, broke down the biggest trends of Hollywoodâs hottest night.
Leading ladies in red
Oscar-winner Viola Davis sizzled in her Armani gown as fellow nominee Ruth Negga looked red hot in her custom-made Valentino.
âViola Davis was a red hot chili pepper,â Smith said of the âFencesâ starâs bold look. âShe looked splendid and regal in this red. I loved the dropped shoulders, I loved that beautiful dark skin on that red. I just thought she was fabulous.â
Bergamotto agreed Davis looked âsizzling,â but added it was surprising to her that more stars hadnât chosen bold, bright colors, opting instead for classic black looks or shiny metallics.
âMetallic was a huge trend last night,â Bergamotto said.
Smith noted that Charlize Theron looked âfabulous,â explaining that âthatâs the way you wear a gold dress.â
Emma Stone, sporting a beautiful gold dress with fringe, was one of Bergamottoâs top three picks for best dressed of the night.
âEmma Stone looked like the Oscar,â she said of the best actress winner. âShe was like the statue itself. And this was a dress that was a nod to âLa La Land,â that old-Hollywood glam, the Givenchy with the fringe. I thought Emma Stone looked amazing and thatâs a classic, classic dress.â
Smith added Stone âcame to winâ in her dress.
âShe dressed like what she wanted to be: a winner,â she said. âKudos to her.â
Timeless and classic black and whites
Unlike years past, the clean and classic black and white gowns were some of the biggest showstoppers at the 89th Academy Awards.
No one pulled off their stunning black and white gown quite like âHidden Figuresâ and âMoonlightâ star Janelle Monáe.
Smith, Bergamotto and Zee were all head over heels for Monáeâs extravagant, embellished gown, with Smith dubbing her âthe mostâ for her efforts on the red carpet.
âShe was doing the most in the best way,â she explained.
Zee said Monáe was channeling Marie Antoinette.
âShe said, âLet them eat cakeâ in that dress,â he joked.
Naomie Harris donned a sleek, white, strapless, sequined gown that flowed behind her on the red carpet, though it didnât strike a chord with the style experts.
âBeautiful, beautiful, but not right for the crème de la crème of the award shows, darling,â Smith said. âIt was too basic. There was not enough going on. I didnât like the high-low moment. Itâs Calvin Klein, so itâs supposed to be very clean, but I just didnât love it for this awards show.â
Zee nicknamed Harrisâ gown the âhello/goodbyeâ dress because âwhen sheâs walking toward you, sheâs like âHello,â but when sheâs walking away, youâre like, âOh, wow!ââ
