Geneva Middle School seeks clothing, school supplies for struggling students – The Star Beacon

GENEVA — Some needs are big, some are small, but Geneva Middle School secretary Roberta Horvath said she doesn’t like to see a student struggle.

Horvath maintains and stocks The Eagle’s Closet, a place for students to get clothing, accessories, school supplies and hygiene products if they can’t afford them.

The Eagles Closet is a donation effort by the staff and students at Geneva Middle School to provide clothing, school supplies and hygiene products to students in need. Horvath said the closet started a couple of years ago, with steering committee advisor Pam Justice taking the reins to keep it going.

“We take donations that are gently used and would be needed by a middle school-aged student,” Horvath said. “We take clothing items and other items that a student may need in a school day, so we don’t accept toys or home items.”

School supplies are also needed, including pens, pencils, notebooks, folders and book bags. Accessory items including belts, scarves, hats, gloves and coats are also on the most needed list, and hygiene products such as deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste and shampoo are always needed.

The closet is always helpful in a pinch, Horvath said.

“Our donations are distributed to our students who are need of items from various situations such as wardrobe malfunctions and lack of resources,” she said. “If I see that a student has a need, or if something comes up during the school day and they need something, I can usually go down to our closet and get them supplies to get them started.”

Horvath said the students are usually appreciative.

“Sometimes they have nowhere else to go to get these things,” she said. “Whether it’s a pair of jeans or a coat or a stick of deodorant, you are filling a need in the community one student at a time.”

Donations appropriate for middle school students ages 11-14 are sought for both boys and girls. Gently used, washed clothing, coats and accessories and unused hygiene products can be dropped off at the Geneva Middle School on Sherman Street during school hours.
