Don’t Assume Jared Leto Is a Fan of Fashion – Vanity Fair
Saturday night’s BoF 500 Gala was sandwiched in the middle of New York Fashion Week. Despite going up against some stiff competition (Alexander Wang held his show at the same time on a dead-end street in Bushwick), fashion’s big names filled the Public hotel on the Lower East Side, entertaining veterans like Karlie Kloss and Diane von Furstenberg along with industry newcomers like model Slick Woods and photographer Petra Collins.
Selena Gomez also joined the party wearing a floral Rodarte gown. The Business of Fashion cover girl hung out with fellow honorees and collaborators Collins and her stylist Kate Young. It was either Gomez or Collins who let out an elated “eep!” when Gomez’s song “Bad Liar” played toward the end of dinner (the song’s music video was directed by Collins).
Fashion muse Jared Leto stood out as he wove through the crowd in a bright, printed Gucci suit, but don’t jump to any conclusions based on the man’s wardrobe.
“That’s a statement you’re making up,” Leto told me after I risked the assumption that the actor/singer loved fashion. “I don’t necessarily know it that’s true.”
I followed up with a more general “so, what are your thoughts on fashion?”
“I guess I would back up and give you my thoughts on creativity,” he said. “My thoughts are that creativity is a great place to solve problems, to tell stories. Whether it’s fashion, or art, or photography, or music, or film, I think a lot of that comes from the same place. So I’m into creativity.”
He was then cut off by Business of Fashion’s founder and editor-in-chief Imran Amed as he introduced a pre-after-party performance by singer Jacob Banks. And so began just another Saturday night out during New York Fashion Week.
